PORT LABELLE FACES WATER SHORTAGE

Due to a high rate of new home construction and continued high demand for water from Port LaBelle Utility System customers, the Hendry County Board of County Commissioners has declared a Phase 2 Water Shortage. The next PLUS Advisory Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 27 at 1pm in the Hendry County Commission Chamber. Topics to be discussed will address three issues:

  1. USDA GRANT / LOAN APPLICATION to cover the cost overruns.
  2. INTERIM FINANCING for the water treatment plant construction project.
  3. AWARD CONTRACT FOR WATER PLANT CONSTRUCTION which will consider the company bids along with the comments from the design engineer and county staff in recommending the awarding of the construction bid.


Port LaBelle Utility System (PLUS) currently serves approximately 1,400 customers with a potential maximum of approximately 11,000 customers upon build-out of the current Port LaBelle service area. The Utility has three major projects currently underway: a new water plant, a water transmission line eastward along Hwy 80, and a water distribution pipe network for Banyan Village. More…

The PLUS Advisory Board is tracking the growth in new home construction and water connections. It is expected that homeowners will need to implement water conservation measures during 2006 to avoid a moratorium on new home construction until additional water treatment and delivery capacity is provided by the new water plant scheduled for completion in early 2007.
